Today, we shall criticize...The Maze Runner series!

Evvvvveryone loves these books. I have not the foggiest idea why. The Maze Runner, The Scorch Trials, The Death Cure, and The Kill Order may be among the most awful science fiction boks known to humankind.

The books started off pretty well, in my opinion. For one, it created a decent mystery: Why are these boys being held in this pre-technological farmland? Why can't they remember their lives? Why can they, despite this, remember their names?

Cool, right? If the author had played his cards right, he could have gradually answered these questions throughout the first and second books.

Unfortunately, that isn't what happened. Like many fated YA novels, the climax led to a jumbled and hurried falling action in the first book.

The remaining two books are terrible. I had to force myself to read The Scorch Trials and CHEERED when it was over, and I just barely finished The Death Cure.

Why were they terrible? Here's why:

1. Plot twists

It's safe to say that plot twists are abundant and heavy-handed in these books. Some of these twists include: There's another test besides the Maze--it's called the Scorch Trials! Ooh--a love triangle! The W.I.C.K.E.D people need Thomas alive! Teresa's good--no she's bad--no she's good! You get the point. Unnecessary and tiresome, are they.

2. Love Triangle

May I just say: WHY?! Gosh, I am exceedingly tired of YA love triangles! Such an angst-fest! I really don't have more to criticize about the love triangle, except for the fact that it exists.

3. One-Dimensional Characters

Thomas did not change throughout the course of these books. He stayed the same incredulous, hero-in-the-headlights young man that he was in the beginning of The Maze Runner. Same goes for the other characters. The lack of interesting characters is staggering! The author has yet to make me invested in a single character.

So there ya have it---The Maze Runner series would recieve a very bad rating on Literary Rotten Tomatoes if I were in charge of it.

But read the books for yourselves and form your own opinion!

:)
