Music
"Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent."
-Victor Hugo
It is an undeniable fact that music is universally adored.
All over the world, at this very moment in time, people are listening to music through headphones, playing music on beautifully crafted instruments, dancing to music on hardwood floors, and singing along to music on the radio. Music touches each and every one of us, deep down in our souls and our hearts, whether intentionally or unintentionally. Music is a part of every culture and civilization, both modern and ancient, rich and impoverish. In short, music is addicting, and humanity can't help itself. Why do we love music? Well, I believe we love music simply because of what it is.
So, what is music?
Music is PERSONAL
Everyone interprets music differently. A certain song may make one person think of heartbreak, while it makes another think of hope. Music was created to be translated by listeners. A person picks their favorite song based on which song seems to perfectly describe them, which song was seemingly written based on their own life. Music is completely up for interpretation and individualization.
Music is UNPREJUDICED
Music does not segregate. A person's age, sex, race, religion, culture, or social standing is of no consequence to music. Music does not belong to any one person or group of people--music is free, belonging to no one yet beloved by all. Music has no judgement as to who a person is or what they've done. As the great John Lennon once said, "Music is everybody's possession. It's only publishers who think that people own it."
Most of all, music is EMOTIONAL
Listening to several brilliant pieces of music, one thing is extremely evident: Good music has emotion. Truly great singers and musicians will completely immerse themselves into their music, pouring raw feelings into every note and lyric. People love hearing emotion in music because it feels authentic and, most importantly, relatable. When a singer chokes up while cooing about lost love, listeners find themselves remembering the pain of their first breakup. When a musician holds a brilliantly beautiful note, people recall the beauty in their own lives. Emotion is the most important aspect of music, because it gives people the ability to relate.
I cannot--nay, I REFUSE to--imagine a world without music. Music is a language that everyone speaks, an ever-present form of magic that connects us all. It is one of the most important and sacred aspects of my life, and of countless others' lives. As Friedrich Nietzsche once so eloquently said, "Without music, life would be a mistake."
