Wow, it has been a long time since I added another post to this blog series! But now I am BACK to discuss the biggest pitfalls and disappointments in today’s popular music scene. Get ready to ask yourself the question…
…What happened to music?!
In the first installment of this blog series, I compared Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines (which is just awful on, like, fifty different levels) and Counting Crows’ Round Here. In other words, I compared two individual songs. Today, however, I’m going to do something a bit different. I’m going to address and criticize a specific genre of today’s music. What is that genre? EDM.
EDM, for anyone who doesn’t know, stands for Electronic Dance Music. There are many sub-genres within EDM, such as dubstep and electronica.
I absolutely loath EDM. Why, you ask? Because it’s made with buttons, not instruments
As a musician, I really hate that EDM is made by pressing buttons and layering synth on top of synth. I’m not saying that using any button-pushing or synth in music is terrible, but I don’t think that an entire song should be solely made up of that. Instruments are the backbone of music, and a song without them is a song without a spine.
There are dozens of artists that delve in the world of EDM, one of the most famous being Deadmou5, an elctronica/house artist. His music is a perfect example of non-instrumental, synth-heavy EDM.
Yeah, I really don’t like EDM. Can you tell? ;)
But go listen to some EDM and form your own opinion about it!
